What is the Interior Design Process Like - Here's What to Expect

So you’ve decided to work with an interior designer! Exciting! Now, you might be wondering what to expect. (If you’re still not sure if working with an interior designer is for you read this post.)

For an interior design project to be successful a thoughtful, intentional process is important. Design projects often require a high level of attention to detail and organization to manage all the different elements that bring a room or whole home together. Designers may have different approaches and processes, so it is important for you to understand that of the designer you are working with to ensure you are on board. In this post I go into detail about my design process and what to expect when working with me.

The Design Process

This design process is my way of seeing that you have a positive, seamless experience while still having fun with design. There are always exceptions to any rule or process, because all projects are different. It’s important to keep an open mind and recognize that design is collaborative and fluid. Here we go!

Step 1: Get to Know Each Other

Discovery & Consultation

During the discovery call we discuss your project and share an overview of how we work to determine if we are a fit.

If it feels like a mutual fit we will proceed with scheduling a Design Consultation. This meeting takes place in your home, at the project site, or on video call. We’ll discuss your goals, design aesthetic, investment level, and timeline. I will also review the design process, provide some initial recommendations, and answer your questions. You’ll come away with a clear idea of next steps. The consultation is a paid appointment for up to 1.5 hours.

Step 2: The Serious Stuff

Letter of Agreement

Should you choose to move forward I will send you a letter of agreement with the scope of work, design fee estimate, terms and policies, and the initial retainer invoice.

Step 3: Design Phase

Planning & Presentation

Once the paperwork is done the fun part starts!

  • First, we'll get measurements, photos, and/or floor plans of the spaces and discuss your lifestyle, wish list, and design style.

  • Next, we will present floor plans, furniture plans, and initial design concepts. This will include an estimated furniture and décor investment by room. This is typically a video call.

  • If cabinetry design is applicable we will then design and present detailed elevations.

  • Once aligned on the above we proceed with the detailed design phase. This entails sourcing all finishes, fixtures, furniture, textiles, lighting, wall and window treatments, etc., ordering samples, requesting quotes and checking lead times. I usually provide options for each item to give you alternatives without overwhelming you with too many choices.

  • The Design Plan Presentation is an in person meeting with you to present the designs along with finish samples that will give you a good visual and feel of fabrics for upholstery, window treatments, paint colors, bath/kitchen finishes like tile and hardware, etc. The design plan will be sent electronically, and final selections are made.

  • Read this post for a behind the scenes look at how we create an interior design concept.

  • Following the design plan presentation we will send proposals that include quotes and lead times for the final selections. Once full payment is received we will proceed with procurement.

This phase typically takes 10-12 weeks from the signed contract's start date, although it may take longer depending on the scope of the project.

Step 4: Implementation Phase

Construction & Furnishing

After final selections are approved and payment received, I take it from there!

  • We track construction progress, provide interior specifications such as plumbing and lighting placement, cabinetry drawings, etc., oversee ordering and delivery of materials, and represent you on-site for walk-throughs with contractors. We field design-related questions and resolve issues that may arise, serving as liaison between you and your builder.

  • We procure furnishings at this time. We detail all the specifications, obtain final quotes and lead times, place and track orders, and schedule and oversee decorative trade work such as painting, wallpaper and window treatment installation.

  • Furniture is received, inspected, and held until construction is complete and the home is ready for furnishing. We schedule Install Day(s) which includes delivery of furniture, removal of packaging, styling of finishing touches, hanging artwork, installing window treatments, and preparing for you to move-in!

  • For construction and renovation contractors, I can provide a referral. You are also welcome to source your own contractors. I will work with contractors as needed to ensure the design is executed to plan. All contractor work is separate, not included in my fees, and is to be vetted and contracted by you. All contractor work is to be quoted by the contractor.

This phase can vary widely from a few months to years depending on the type of project.

Step 5: Finishing Phase

The Reveal

This is the last layer and often the most impactful part of a design, making the space look and feel complete and pulled together.

  • This includes all the finishing touches like decorative accessories, pillows, vases, frames, small storage, art and more. We source and purchase all items based on an agreed upon budget, and bring it all in on Install Day to style your space and pull it all together.

  • The Reveal – During Install Day(s) I request that the client steps out of the home for the duration to allow us to do our best work. I will walk-through the space with you when complete and share all the beautiful details!

Step 6: Post-Project Wrap Up

  • Professional Photography – The only way Interior Designers can showcase their work is by capturing the spaces they design through photography. I may request to take professional photos at the end of a project, which will be scheduled as a separate photo shoot day.

  • Survey – I am always looking for ways to improve and your feedback is very important to me. Therefore, I will send you a brief survey after closing the project that I appreciate you taking the time to complete.

  • Reviews and Referrals – As a small business owner reviews and referrals are critical to our business. I would greatly appreciate your review on my Yelp, Houzz, and/or Google listings.

As with any successful project, planning and a thoughtful process is an important element. I hope this post was helpful insight into what my design process is like and puts your mind at ease that your home transformation will be handled in a thoughtful way.
